Polarization-Independent Second-Order Photonic Topological Corner States

Recently, much attention has been paid to second-order photonic topological insulators (SPTIs), because of their support for highly localized corner states with excellent robustness. SPTIs have implemented in either transverse-magnetic (TM) or transverse-electric (TE) polarizations two-dimensional crystals (PCs), and the resultant are polarization dependent, which limits application polarization-independent optics. However, achieve is not easy, since they usually in-gap exact location band gap known advance. Here we report on an SPTI based a square-lattice PC made elliptic metamaterial, that whether trivial depends choice unit cell. It found locations gaps TM TE frequency spectrum can be independently controlled by out-of-plane permittivity ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ in-plane ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$, respectively, more importantly, also separately manipulated them. From this, both same adjusting robustness regard disorders defects numerically demonstrated. The proposed provides potential scenario devices.
